Over the past few years I’ve used Twitter a lot. When I initially started to use it, I didn’t quite understand what I was doing or why I would want to share small amounts of information with strangers, or how often I should share it. What do you share in 140 chars. and why would anybody care what I was tweeting? Why would I care about what others were tweeting?

Years later, I tweet everything that I see or think of. I use FourSquare to tweet where I’m at, and people at that venue follow me on Twitter. I’ve started to use Twitter to document my life; what I’m doing, thinking, or where I’m going. I use Nike+  to tweet how far/fast I run and what playlist I was listening to when I ran. In 2011 I saved over $400 on free dinners, clothing, discounts, movie passes, sporting event tickets and prints by following businesses and retweeting promotions. Some of my tweets were read on the radio and some of my favorite comedians tweeted me. Some of my followers have hired me to do side work for them and I’ve managed to make a decent amount of money from it.

Just about everybody on Twitter that I follow/follows me is from the Cleveland, OH area and we go to the same places and sometimes we know the same people. I’ve met people in real life that eventually followed me on Twitter, and I’ve followed people on Twitter that eventually met me in real life. Once this started to happen more often, it wasn’t weird meeting people from Twitter and it answered some of my initial questions when I first started to use it.

I decided yesterday that I was going to take a break from Twitter for a little bit for numerous reasons. I didn’t expect to have a reaction to not using it. I went to Trader Joes in Crocker Park and felt the urge to tweet about how difficult it was to find gluten free products in the store and how my overall experience was. I wanted to tweet what I was listening to and what movie I was watching for no reason at all. It makes me wonder what I did before Twitter and how not using it long term would affect me.
